Thomas Darlington collection, 1684-1891.

The manuscripts in this collection were collected by Thomas Darlington (1784-1866) and span the years 1688 to 1891. Known as the family historian, his collection contains information on the Darlington, Townsend, and Brinton families as well as numerous other Chester County residents and events during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The collection includes correspondence, surveys and other land related documents, wills, marriage certificates, poetry, bonds and other financial papers, summons, warrants, complaints and other court related documents, documents pertaining to various Monthly Meetings; ciphering and account books, a brief travel diary, autograph album, stock certificates for Susquehanna Bridge Company, etc. Topics include genealogy, education, military service, American Indians, Gen. Sheridan's burning of property in Virginia, and correspondence concerning Revolutionary War and War of 1812 pensions. The collection also includes Thomas's poignant correspondence with his brother-in-law concerning the illness and subsequent death of his sister, Sarah.

Thomas Darlington (27 June 1784-17 Feb. 1866) was the second of seven children born to Edward and Hannah Townsend Darlington. He did not marry and was buried at Birmingham Meeting Burial ground. Other than a few sentences in Futhey and Cope's History of Chester County, not much is known about Thomas. It appears he may have shared in his better known brother William's passion for botany as a brief eulogy in the Oxford Press (25 Feb. 1866) stated that Thomas "was a practical pomologist."
